BIG TIMES, Inc.

Introduction

You are a wealthy business owner that would like to buy a professional football team.  Your company is called BIG TIMES, Inc. There are two teams up for sale and both teams have an identical record.  Your decision on which team to buy will be based on which team you think will make it further into the playoffs.  You have decided to research the statistics of both teams and make a proposal to your company’s board of directors about which company you feel will perform better this year.  You are trying to choose between the Miami Dolphins or New York Jets  You are going to use ratios, unit rate, and proportions to analyze each team statistically and, by using this information, predict which team will make it further into the playoffs and have the best shot at making it to the Super Bowl.  However, the board of directors won’t just take your word for it.  You need to create a presentation that will really get them motivated to approve of your proposal.

Task

1.  First, you will complete the practice word problems about proportions in order to help you better understand what they are used for.

2.   Each team will use the links provided to get the stats on each football team and fill out the stats chart on Microsoft Excel.

3.  After you have done this you will write an investment proposal (PowerPoint presentation) to the Big Times, Inc. board of directors as to which team would be the best investment.

Process

1.     If there are 3 FEET in 1 YARD, then how many FEET are in an entire football field, which is 120 YARDS?

2.  The average human heart beats at 72 beats per minute. How many times does it beat in 15 seconds? How many in an hour? How many in a day?

30:20........25:75........100:10.......2:18.......15:90..........2:8...

Now, you will be prepared to look at and fill out the chart below by going to the resources and looking up each team's stats.  I have done the first one for you to give you an example.

Assessment

·        Students are to complete the first task which consists of two word problems and six problems that involve simplifying ratios.  You may complete this task on your own sheet of paper.

·        The next task is to complete the two tables.  Once you get to this section please raise your hand so the teacher may come around to bring up the table in Microsoft Excel for you.  Complete the table in excel and save before moving on.

·        Lastly students need to create a PowerPoint presentation that consists of 5 slides.  The first three slides need to have data from your tables to explain why you think the board of directors should choose your team.  The last two slides are allowed for you to bring in your opinions of the team you choose and you can speak against the other team as well.  Remember, the board of directors need to be convinced by facts, not just opinions.

Once you have completed all tasks you need to click on the following link to get to rubric and answer key so you may self-assess your work.

Conclusion

After completing this web quest, you should be able to understand how to use ratios, proportions and percentages.
