Chorus Choir classes at Northern provide students the opportunity to learn about choral singing that otherwise would not get this chance. Singers do not have to have sight reading skill, but merely be able to “carry a tune”. These students are not required to perform at concerts, but some do, and all, however, go Christmas caroling. Some become terrific choral singers even though they come from a background of not ever having had choral training..

Band
The Northern Middle School
Band program is open to all students in grades 6-8. In addition
to regular 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes which meet during
Exploratory classes on B Days, we offer Performance Band, an
auditioned group consisting of the best band students from each
grade level. The Performance Band earned straight Distinguished
Ratings at the 2007 KMEA Concert Band Festival and straight
Superior Ratings at the 2007 Trills and Thrills Festival at
Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, TN. In addition, the NMS Jazz
Ensemble and NMS Pep Band are offered as extra curricular
activities. Students also have the opportunity to participate
in honors bands and solo and ensemble festivals throughout the
school year. Parents also have the opportunity to become
involved as part of the NMS Band Booster organization. This
group meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in
the NMS band room. The Northern Middle School Band program is
under the direction of Scott Sexton.
