Language Arts Committee

  1. Evaluate and restructure curriculum timelines monthly and make revisions as necessary for implementation.
  2. Discuss PD needs and submit requests to Ms. Hargis quarterly.
  3. One grade level will submit a common assessment per grading term for the committee to review and provide feedback using the SIT Item Analysis for Assessments protocol.  Discuss the use of open response questions at each grade level  and share examples of effective open response questions that measure application of content at high levels. 
  4. Conduct analysis of student work for Reading and On-Demand Writing.  The committee should develop a schedule of which teachers will submit work for each analysis and turn in with your minutes to Ms. Murphy.
  5. Analyze CATS and NCLB data and develop a plan of action for your content (Reading and Writing) to target identified needs (Sp. Ed. And Gifted) and set goals for novice reduction.  Submit to Ms. Murphy with November minutes. Review implementation and impact of the activities at each meeting.
  6. Develop a common mid-year and a final exam for  at each grade level.
  7. Seek and share ideas for integrated technology, resources, and content specific instructional strategies at each meeting.
  8. Adhere to the District Writing Plan for Middle Schools.
  9. After review of CATS and NCLB data, develop a Writing Plan for the next biennium and submit with November minutes to Ms. Murphy.
  10. Develop units of study for implementation during ESS Academies for Reading and Novice reduction for portfolios.
  11. Discuss resource and material needs for the department (calculators, dictionaries, thesauri, etc.) at each meeting.
  12. Discuss and share effective collaboration strategies at each meeting.
  13. Review your CATS goal for the upcoming school year each meeting.
  14. Develop a School Wide Writing Plan and submit to SBDM Council for approval.  This should be completed by fall break.
