On Saturday, December 1, the Northern Middle School Academic Team competed in the Kentucky Colonel's Sixth Grade Academic Showcase.  Northern competed against teams from Science Hill, Southern, Somerset Christian, Corbin, Whitley Central, Whitley City, and Pine Knot.  Students competed in Quick Recall as well as Written Assessment events in Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Arts and Humanities.

Final team standings were as follows:
 
1st place  Northern Middle School            49 points
2nd place Science Hill Independent          25.8 points
3rd place  Southern Middle School           24 points
4th place  Somerset Christian School       22.3 points
5th place  Whitley Central Intermediate     9.5 points
6th place  Corbin Middle School               9 points
7th place  Pine Knot Middle School          8.3 points
8th place  Whitley City Elementary           2 points
 
Northern finished first in Quick Recall.  Team members included Thomas Gholson, Katherine Stockham, Rachel Phelps, Ashley Johnson, Laura Cherry, Sarah Price, Mason Stevens, Morgan Stevens, Grayson Murphy, Jacob Pratt, Lane Wilson, Katie Bryant
 
Northern won their opening round Quick Recall game 39-20 over Science Hill.  They then won 38-18 over Corbin and 26-24 over Southern to advance to the Championship game where they once again faced Science Hill.  After trailing by 12 points at halftime, Northern was able to come back to win the Championship game 28-27.

Mason Stevens finished 2nd in Social Studies
Laura Cherry finished 2nd in Arts and Humanities

Coaches Scott Sexton and Denna Reynolds would like to thank Debra Thompson and Susie Holbrook for serving as officials for Northern.  They would also like to thank all of the parents who helped throughout the day.  Most of all, they would like to thank the teachers and staff at NMS.  This accomplishment is truly a testament to all of your hard work.
